Expliner Robot – High Voltage Transmission Line Inspection Robot
Expliner is a robot designed to perform inspection of live high-voltage transmission lines. Inspection of transmission lines is physically demanding, may affect the supply of electricity, and often puts inspectors at risk. Remote sensing techniques have been developed, such as helicopter-based cameras and more recently drones, but the level of detail is still limited.
With Expliner, there is no need to stop the transmission of electricity. Since Expliner moves along the transmission lines, it is able to place sensors directly over or around the lines, acquiring an unprecedented level of detail of the conductors.
Expliner is able to overcome obstacles such as cable spacers, dampers and even suspension towers, while maintaining the operators in safety, and with no need to interrupt the transmission of electricity.
With Expliner, inspection of transmission lines becomes safer, more affordable, repeatable and more precise, paving the way for predictive maintenance and better asset management.
Toyota’s High-Tech Realistic Driving Simulator
It looks like something out of science fiction perhaps a flight simulator for an advanced spacecraft. Inside this white dome in a hanger at the base of Mount Fuji in Japan is something just as high-tech, but with a more down-to-earth aim.
It’s the world’s most advanced driving simulator, designed to replicate the sensations of sitting behind the wheel of a car. It’s part of Toyota’s research into reducing road accidents.Designed to replicate the sensations of sitting behind the wheel of a car.
The dome itself, which acts as a giant 360-degree video screen, can be moved via precision computer control around an area the equivalent of four tennis courts, simulating a real driving experience that includes a sense of speed, acceleration and riding comfort with sound effects thrown in to complete the virtual driving experience.
But for engineers at Toyota Motor Corp., their new machine is anything but a toy. It’s the culmination of a four-year project to build the world’s most realistic driving simulator.

A 500hp Tractor Smashes Record For World’s Fastest Tractor – 80.87mph
When it comes to breaking records Top Gear haven’t exactly been shy, furthermore these records never seem to be what most people would call normal or conventional.This time in something which is renowned for being slow, a tractor.
Not just any tractor however, this time in a heavily modified tractor which will be used in the next episode of Top GearCan Top Gear’s 500hp, 5.7-litre V8 ‘Track-tor’ set a new Guinness World Records title for Fastest Tractor?
Even with the wet test track severely limiting traction – not really! – the tractor managed to smash the old record by a full seven miles per hour Speed to beat 80.87mph and officially claiming the Guinness World Record for Fastest Tractor.
The bright orange farm vehicle also sports 54-inch tyres, a push start button, barometer and a wellington boot and spade rack.Equally as impressive is the engineering expertise of the Top Gear team that made this possible – the combination of their skills makes for brilliant record-breaking fun.
Custom Green Camaro Sits On Massive 32-inch Rims
CAR-lover Corey Jones has customised his Camaro with a massive set of 32-inch rims. The 32-year-old, who works at Excalibur Motors in Joliet, Illinois, has been building custom cars for six years.
Corey got his first car at age 17 and since then has owned over ten custom cars – but considers his green Camaro his best build to date.
He believes his car, which features rims twice as big as the standard set, has inspired his hometown of Chicago, USA to join a new car culture.
It is not an off-road car with heavy-duty suspension (s one may think at first, but a regular Chevy Camaro fitted with 32-inch rims, which comes about twice as big as a regular set of wheels.

“We are pretty well tapped today on what we can do with the tractor alone until we clean up the trailer. Once we did the trailer, speaking in relative numbers, a 2-3% improvement on the tractor became an 8-10% improvement because of the overall reduction in drag on the rear of the trailer.”
The 475-hp, 1,850 lb-ft, N13 engine has a prototype exhaust-heat recovery system using ethanol as the working fluid. But low power demands at cruise does not generate a lot of engine and exhaust heat to reuse.
“At speeds above 50 mph, we drop the front and rear suspension by 1.5 to 2 inches,” says Oppermann. “The boat tail at the rear helps to reduce the low pressure area at the base of the trailer, too. That relatively small shape change is very good for air flow.”
