Inside The Largest Amateur Built Submarine “Euronaut”

The following footage shows two trips of the private submarine “Euronaut” to the wreck of “Sandtrans” and to the unnamed wreck field off the German island Darss in Baltic Sea. The trips took place in july and august 2015 with a purpose to train the crew.

“Sandtrans” was a Danish suction excavator, which sank on september 15th 1978. Overall length 60 m (197 ft) and lays keel up with the max depth of 12 m (39 ft). Min. depth at the highest point 5 m (16 ft). The typical visibility is below 5 m. The day we visited the wreck it was even much worse.

“Euronaut” is a private project of a research and diver support submarine around Carsten Standfuss – a German naval architect. It has been designed between 1988 and 2000. Then it took another 12 years to build it on holidays, weekends and after work.

Most systems on board are second hand and homebuilt. The sub has overall length of 16 m (52 ft), surface displacement of 57 tons and is capable of diving up to 250 m (820 ft). Transit speed is up to 6 knots with a 190 hp diesel engine. Electric drive measures 40 kW.

The life support system provides air for the crew of six persons for a week. The diving chamber allows saturation dives to the depths similar to the operational depth of the submarine.

LSEV The World’s First Mass Produced 3D Printed Electric Car

The world’s first 3D printed car looks set to make production in 2019 and its maker believes it previews an “inevitable” change that’ll affect the whole industry.

Produced by Chinese company Polymaker and Italy-based vehicle manufacturer X Electrical Vehicle, the Smart-sized LSEV is almost entirely made using 3D printing technology, which creates parts from the ground up, layer by layer.

Powered by batteries and an electric motor, this love-child of a Renault Twizy and a Toyota iQ weighs 450kg and can reach a dizzying top speed of 43mph.Despite the fact that it’s slower than many 50cc mopeds, the LSEV could be the solution Chinese cities need.

A predicted driving range of up to 93 miles should be adequate for simply getting you in and out of the urban sprawl before returning to the same park and ride-style venue you picked it up from.

This prototype took three days to build, but Polymaker says a production line churning out 500 annual units is possible. Sales of the dinky city car, whose crash safety performance is so far a mystery, should start late next year, with prices of around $10,000.

Festo – BionicWheelBot – The Amazing SPIDER Robot That Can Roll Like A Tire

Like its biological model, the flic-flac spider, the BionicWheelBot can both walk and roll. Together with its discoverer, Professor Ingo Rechenberg, the Festo bionics team has used these unique movement patterns and turned them into a technical masterpiece for the Hannover Messe 2018.

In order to start rolling, the BionicWheelBot bends three legs each on the left and right of its body to make a wheel. Two legs folded up whilst walking then extend, push the rolled-up spider off the ground, and continuously push it forward whilst rolling.

This prevents the BionicWheelBot from grinding to a halt and ensures that it can move itself forward even on rough terrain. In rolling mode, the artificial spider – like its natural role model – is much faster than when walking.

At the same time, the robot can even overcome inclines of up to five per cent uphill. The biological model for the BionicWheelBot is the flic-flac spider (cebrennus rechenbergi). It lives in the Erg Chebbi desert on the edge of the Sahara.

Bollinger B1 – The World’s First-Ever All-Electric Sport Utility Truck

If the Land Rover Defender and Tesla Model S had a baby, it would be the Bollinger B1.This one of the most interesting and maybe even the first true all-electric, off-road vehicle that’s production bound.

With two electric motors and a 120 kWh battery there is option for a smaller 60 kWh pack it should be pretty capable, especially with that electric drivetrain that’s known for being exceptional in off-road situations.

The Electric Sport Utility Truck seems solid and offers a lot of space inside. The Bollinger Motors B1 features an all-aluminum chassis and body with a dual-motor electric powertrain married to a 120-kWh battery pack providing a minimum 200-mile range.

The 5,000-pound truck has a payload capacity of 5,000 pounds, and an adjustable suspension can vary ground clearance from 10 to 20 inches,it offers 360 hp and a 0-60 time of just 4.5 seconds.

Inside, its utilitarian space is made more inviting with leather seating for four, a leather steering wheel, and a marine-grade, Bluetooth-enabled stereo system, while the exterior is finished in a unique Gunhouse Grey with black accents and a black satin wheel finish for a no-nonsense appearance.

Veemo – A Fully Enclosed Solar Powered E-Bike

The Veemo is an incredible fully enclosed electric assist bicycle with an 80 Watt solar panel on the roof to trickle charge the battery. It was designed by VeloMetro to be a shareable vehicle in Vancouver and eventually in cities around the world. The idea is that people can rent these e-bikes and use them as an extension of the public transportation system in a given city.

The electric assist makes it possible for people with different fitness levels to use the bike, and to get around the city without breaking a sweat or getting wet if it’s raining. This ebike can go up to 30 km/hour and the battery gives it a range of 100km.

To operate these electric bikes as a fleet, but without having expensive infrastructure, VeloMetro plans to have a battery swap system with a truck packed with charged batteries who will go around and swap out batteries that are low on power.

Kody Baker from VeloMetro thinks these bikes (Velomobiles) will help cities make a modal shift towards getting people out of single occupant cars and into active transportation.

The positive impacts of a modal shift would mean fewer cars on the road, less noise and air pollution, more space for bike lanes, and a healthier population. Veemo even has shocks, power windows and locks, and space behind the seat for groceries or luggage.

Google is shuttering its URL shortening service

Google announced that it is shutting down its URL shortening service, goo.gl. The company says that new and anonymous users won’t be able to create links through the goo.gl console as of April 13th, but existing users will be able to use it for another year, after which it will be discontinued completely.

Firebase Software Engineer Michael Hermanto says that the company introduced the URL shortener in 2009, and that since then, the ways in which people share information on the web has changed, while additional URL shorteners have grown in popularity. He notes that Google is refocusing its efforts by replacing it with Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL), which allow users to redirect to specific locations in iOS, Android or web apps.

Existing users will be able to create shortened URLs and export data from the goo.gl console through March 30th 2019. After that time, shortened links will continue to redirect to their destinations, but won’t be migrated over to the new Firebase console.

The World’s Smallest Jet – The FLS Microjet

If you ever hear someone talking about the smallest jet in the world it means that they are talking about a high performance, aerobatic, single seat, low-wing, all metal, jet-powered aircraft called FLS.The BD-5 was dubbed “The World’s Smallest Jet” and quickly earned a reputation as James Bond’s jet when it was featured in the movie “Octopussy.”

At EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, AirshowStuff sat down with Justin Lewis, pilot of the USFleetTracking FLS Microjet, the world’s smallest jet. Watch to see this amazing aircraft in action, and hear about how it came to be and why it is so special!

At just over 5 meters long, it can reach speeds of up to 515 km/h while having a range of 370 km. It is powered by a Quantum Turbine System which gives a thrust of 265lbs 120 kg, allowing it an impressive maximum carrying capacity of 200 kg while the plane itself only weighs 188 kg.

The FLS was originally created by a small company – Bede Aircraft in the 1970s.tThe first aircraft got a name of BD-5. However, in a few years the company was shut down leaving the smallest jet’s destiny unknown until 1992, when the aircraft was picked upby Ed (“Skeeter”) & Richard Karnes started BD Micro Technologies, Inc. who decided to update the BD-5 with modern instruments and safer building techniques.
